audition Information

The first step in the enrollment process for students in grades 4–12 is to schedule a free audition. Auditions generally take place during June and August for the Fall semester, and January for the Spring semester.* During the audition, a member of our artistic team will conduct a 15-minute audition with your child over Zoom.

Auditions are relaxed and informal. Acceptance and placement are based on vocal ability and for older choristers, music reading and performing experience. Most importantly, we look for a love of singing and enthusiasm for learning music.

Progression to more advanced choir levels is determined through rehearsal observation for the youngest choirs and through in person auditions for our upper-level choirs starting at the Intermediate Choir level. Answers to common questions can be found in the Audition FAQ’s below.

*If the semester has already begun and there are no auditions available, please email sdcc@sdcchoir.org to arrange for an audition. Auditions typically close three weeks after the semester starts, depending on the choir level.

how do i schedule an audition?

Fill out the above form. Call 858-587-1087 or email us at sdcc@sdcchoir.org if you have any questions or if you cannot make any of the available appointment times.

Where do auditions take place?

Auditions take place over Zoom. After signing up above, a Zoom link will be emailed to you with your appointment confirmation.

What preparation is needed?

No preparation is necessary for the audition, and auditions are free. Auditions are simply designed to gauge a child’s basic skill level in the areas of ear training and vocal independence. Choristers auditioning for Apprentice, Intermediate or Youth Chorale are not required to have previous music reading or singing experience. Auditions for the advanced Premier Choir (grades 7–12) or Chamber Choir (grades 10-12) include as a sight-reading/music literacy assessment and there is an expectation of previous experience.

Can parents sit in on the audition?

Singers are welcome to have anyone in the room with them during their Zoom audition, we typically ask their preference before the singing portion of the audition starts.

what happens after the audition?

Families are generally informed right after the audition if their child is accepted, and which choir level would best suit their current skills. Registration and tuition information will be emailed afterward.

We look forward to meeting you!
